Medication Administration

To ensure the safe and effective use of medications during the school day, the diocesan Catholic Schools Office has developed a medication administration policy. Safe practices for administration of medications at school. Please see the “Clinic Forms” page for any necessary Medication Permission forms that need to be submitted.

  • Only medication which is necessary for the child to remain in school will be given during school hours. Medications should preferably be administered at home unless absolutely necessary.
  • Signed physician orders and parent consent must be provided for both prescription and over-the-counter medications prior to administration. The name, dosage, route of administration, and time of administration must be specified.
  • Expired medications will not be administered.
  • Parents are responsible for bringing in medication to the clinic and picking up unused medication. Medication is not kept from year to year in the clinic and will be properly destroyed at the end of the school year if not picked up.
  • Emergency medication (asthma inhalers, epi pens, etc) is sent on field trips with the teacher.
  • Middle school students may self-carry emergency medication during school sponsored after-school activities only when Archdiocesan policy has been followed and physician orders, parental consent, and student knowledge of how/when to administer medication has been demonstrated.
  • Medication orders expire at the end of each school year. New orders will be required at the beginning of each school year.
